Parenting Education Program 

4-C Parent Educators help parents enhance their parenting skills through group classes, home visits, parent/child activities and phone consultation. An emphasis is placed on child development, fostering positive self-esteem, managing stress and anger (for the parent and child), effective communication, positive guidance and enhancing family life. Services are available in English and Spanish. 

Parent education services are provided at no cost to DeKalb County parents through partnerships with the DeKalb Community Unit School District, DeKalb County Schools, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Child and Adolescent Local Area Network. 

Parent Mentoring Program 

The Parent Mentoring Program is a one-on-one program for DeKalb County parents. 

A parent educator meets with parents individually, either in their home or at the 4-C office, providing 6 or more parenting sessions. Information provided includes child growth and development, effective communication, stress and anger management, child guidance, fostering positive self-esteem, nutrition, and other topics of interest to the parent.

Six-Week Parenting Class 

The six-week parenting class is held once a week for 6 weeks at various times during the year. Child care is provided on-site during the evening classes, and is available at no cost to the parent. 

The class covers 6 topics, although the parent educator will address other topics either individually or as they are presented in class.  The six topics include:

  1. Growth and Development
  2. Effective Communication
  3. Fostering Positive Self-Esteem
  4. Stress and Anger Management
  5. Child Guidance
  6. Enhancing Family Life  

Parents who are interested in the group class must commit to all six sessions.  The parenting class includes various experiential activities and time for parents to share information with each other.

Information for Expectant Parents 

Parents in DeKalb County who are expecting a child or awaiting an adoptive child can receive services one-on-one to prepare for their role as parents. 

A parent educator will meet with parents individually, either in their home or at the 4-C office.  After the child arrives, a parent educator can continue to meet with new parents to provide  information about child development.

Practical Information for New Parents 

New parents have a lot of questions about their infants and toddlers. Parents can call a parent educator for tips, advice and resources. 

A parent educator is available to meet with parents individually, either in their home or at the 4-C office for six or more parenting sessions. Information provided will include child growth and development, effective communication, stress and anger management, child guidance, fostering positive self-esteem, nutrition, and other topics of interest to the parent.

Family Fun Nights 

Family fun nights are scheduled throughout DeKalb County, typically at a local elementary school or a community building. 

Family fun nights are designed to enhance the parent/child bond by providing various activities centered around a theme, organized in an open house setting. 

Typically, family fun nights will be announced either through the media, mailings or a particular school.

Infant & Toddler Lapsits 

Infants and Toddlers are always busy! Lapsits are loosely structured play times between a parent and a child and held in a small group setting. 

Lapsits are held at the DeKalb Public Library on the second and fourth Mondays of every month at 9:30 am and during the evening on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 5:30pm.

Parenting Workshops 

Parenting workshops are scheduled throughout DeKalb County, typically at a local elementary school or a community building and are a one-time group presentation.
