Building Engagement with Teen Moms
Parents, like children in our care, come to use with varying needs and abilities. Teen moms are no exception to this, bringing their own set of needs, skills, and experiences. Teenage moms are a marginalized group that often bears the burden of negative stereotypes and many believe that teens should not be parents. As with any other family, strong partnerships with teen moms are built on good communication and, as the parent communicates their unique needs, providers will want to be knowledgeable of available resources to meet those needs. Our presenter works with teen moms every day and will discuss engaging and communicating with teen moms, development needs in building the relationship and utilizing trauma-informed principles in understanding the young mother’s perspective.
